step 1 step 2 step 3

Where to rank Tom Brady?

Dec 15, 2008 at 1:54 PM

Another fantasy football season is winding down, meaning for some owners it's already time to look ahead to next season... especially those of you who play in keeper and dynasty leagues.  To that end it's never too early to begin speculating on 2009 rankings, and in my opinion the top 10 quarterbacks will be the toughest to rank.

Who's number one at quarterback next year? Well, I went on record on my Fantasy Football Weekly radio show this past weekend and forecasted that Peyton Manning would sit atop my quarterback heap going into next season, but that is hardly a lock. A serious case could also be made for Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Philip Rivers, Jay Cutler, and...oh yeah... that guy from the Patriots. What's his name?

Seriously, where do you rank Tom Brady going into next year? Let's assume for a moment that his knee has been rehabbed to the point where he is able to participate in training camp next July. What do you do with a guy who, in his last full season, threw for 4,806 yards and a record 50 touchdown passes? He'll have Randy Moss and Wes Welker to play catch with and, who knows what other pieces the Pats might add this offseason.

Is Brady a top-three fantasy quarterback heading into next season if he is healthy? The quick answer is: why wouldn't he be?  However, I would like to hear what the faithful users here at FantasyFootballChamps have to say on the topic. Weigh in with your own forecasted top-five fantasy quarterbacks heading into next year, and make a case for or against Brady.

Here's my list and the earliest round I would take them: Brees (3) Manning (3) Romo (4) Brady (4) Warner (4) I do have an interesting situation. I have to choose between Brady and Warner in a keeper league. I'm leaning Brady; but, it's close in my mind. Warner lead my otherwise bad team to the playoffs this year. One thing I learned from this year is not to take a QB earlier than the 3rd round. I think that's the round that the top tier guys makes sense. If they are all gone by then (they most likely will be) you will do fine with lessor QBs. I scored a league record 171 points in a two QB league this week with Tavarius Jackson and Brian Griese as my QBs (I drafted Tom Brady and Carson Palmer in the 1st and 2nd rounds). Oh yeah, and for all the Cutler lovers; thank you for playing him. He was so inconsistent he killed his owners.

Simply stated, yet. Brady will be among the league leaders in touchdowns. I also expect him to come back ready to play. What I am wondering about is where Matt Cassel will be. I'm thinking that he may end up in Buffalo, which would make him 7 or 6th. Another question to me is Kurt Warner.

Brady has to be a top three if healthy. I would have questions about Warner and Rivers/Cutler are a bit new to be ranked in the top 3. Brees has proven he can get it done with anyone and may set the yardage record with key players out for much of the year. I would rank them Brees #1/Healthy Brady #2/Romo #3/Manning #4. I think Manning may have reached his apex and he begins to make a slow decline.
