Freeney will start Super Bowl
Feb 07, 5:12 PM According to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, Indianapolis Colts' defensive end Dwight Freeney is expected to start in tonight's Super Bowl against the New Orleans Saints. Freeney arrived at Sun Life Stadium early this afternoon and immediately began receiving treatment on his injured ankle. Assuming he does not suffer any major setbacks in pre-game warm-ups, the Colts' leading sack-artist appears ready to contribute this evening, as he and his teammates attempt to bring a second championship home to Inidanapolis in the last four years.
Fantasy Spin: Considering the stage, it's no surprise that Freeney will gut it out tonight. His presence alone will likely provide a spiritual lift for Indy's defense, but that emotion will fade quickly if Freeney is unable to wreak his usual havoc on a bum ankle. His effectiveness (or lack thereof) could very well be a deciding factor in tonight's match-up of offensive juggernauts. View original story

Freeney is active
Feb 07, 5:08 PM Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney is active for tonight's Super Bowl against the Saints. He has been unable to practice all week because of an ankle injury.
Fantasy Spin: We expected Freeney to play, but we also are very skeptical that he can be effective because he is nowhere near 100 percent. Look for the Saints to go right at him. Freeney misses final tune-up
Feb 06, 8:16 PM Indianapolis Colts' defensive end Dwight Freeney missed the team's final tune-up before Super Bowl XLIV, sitting out practice again on Saturday because of a torn ligament in his right ankle. Freeney has not practiced all week, and is listed as questionable to face the New Orleans Saints tomorrow evening in the season finale.
Fantasy Spin: Freeney will test the ankle in pre-game warm-ups on Super Sunday, and we're guessing he sees the field in some capacity tomorrow night. The number of snaps he plays, and the degree to which he is effective on those snaps, however, is truly anybody's guess at this point. View original story

Wayne practices fully
Feb 06, 7:22 PM After leaving practice early on Friday because of discomfort in his right knee, Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Reggie Wayne returned to his normal routine with the first team offense on Saturday. Wayne is officially listed as probable on the Colts' injury report for Super Bowl XLIV.
Fantasy Spin: Barring a huge (and unforeseen) setback, Wayne will be out there for his usual full compliment of snaps against the Saints on Super Sunday. View original story

Holt to be released
Feb 06, 5:40 PM According to the Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver Torry Holt has been informed he will not return to the team in 2010. The 33 year-old former first-round pick had 51 catches for 722 yards in 2009, but did not manage to find the end-zone last season. Teams are not permitted to officially begin releasing players until Monday, but the Jaguars reportedly wanted to give the veteran a chance to begin selling his services in hopes of quickly landing with another organization.
Fantasy Spin: The Jaguars realize they need to find a true playmaker to start opposite oft-injured receiver Mike Sims-Walker next season. And though Holt still has reliable hands and is considered one of the most precise route-runners in the league, he has lost a step (at least) and is simply no longer a downfield threat. Look for Jacksonville to draft some young talent at the position (perhaps a polished prospect early, and an atletic--but raw--project or two in the later rounds) that can stretch the field vertically and dissuade opponents from stacking the box against Maurice Jones-Drew. Freeney listed as questionable
Feb 05, 7:23 PM Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney is listed as questionable for Sunday's Super Bowl against the Saints because of the torn ligament in his ankle, but he remains optimistic. "He's trending in the right direction," Colts head coach Jim Caldwell said at his final pre-Super Bowl news conference on Friday.
Fantasy Spin: Freeney will be a game-day decision and, though we expect him to play, he likely won't be able to make much of an impact. His quarterback pressure will be impossible for the Colts to replace. View original story

Stallworth to be reinstated
Feb 05, 7:18 PM NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that he would reinstate suspended Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth following Sunday's Super Bowl. Stallworth was convicted of DUI manslaughter after an accident last March and spent 24 days in jail. Stallworth was suspended from the NFL last August as a result.
Fantasy Spin: It is entirely possible that Stallworth will be released by the Browns upon his reinstatement. Regardless, fantasy owners should not bother leaving a roster spot available for him in keeper leagues. View original story

Wayne hurts knee
Feb 05, 7:12 PM Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne left practice 20 minutes early today, according to The Associated Press, after tweaking his right knee. He is listed as probable for the Super Bowl.
Fantasy Spin: No need to panic. The injury does not sound serious and should not affect Wayne's availability for Super Sunday. We still have him rated the top wideout in this weekend's game. View original story

Tomlinson says he will not return to Chargers
Feb 04, 9:29 PM Chargers running back LaDanian Tomlinson told the San Diego Union-Tribune Thursday that he's "accepted" that he will not be returning to the team next season. The former league-MVP said he did not know exactly when he might be released, but that he may instruct his agent to work to hasten the process.
Fantasy Spin: This potential split feels like it has been in the works for some time now. Between LT's declining production, and increasing sensitivity towards talk of his declining production, the inevitable divorce from the Chargers seems like it might be best for both parties...and probably sooner, rather than later. Thomas questions future with Patriots
Feb 04, 8:02 PM According to the Boston Globe, New England Patriots' linebacker Adalius Thomas revealed Thursday that he was "probably done" with the team, explaining that "something happened" between he and head coach Bill Belichick (though he remains unsure as to exactly what caused the riff). Thomas is still under contract however, and if the Patriots opt not to cut him this offseason, he will be due nearly $5 million in salary in 2010.
Fantasy Spin: Thomas was buried in Belichick's doghouse throughout 2009, and he became a forgotten man in IDP leagues, as well. With the ideal skill set to be a fantasy contributor, owners should hope Thomas gets the opportunity to showcase those same natural abilities in a different city. View original story

Smith seeks out opinions on shoulder
Feb 04, 7:41 PM According to Detroit Lions' beat writer Tom Kowalski (citing a "league source"), running back Kevin Smith is actively seeking further medical opinions on the injured left shoulder that was initially expected to require surgery this offseason. Reportedly, Smith is now considering avoiding a surgical procedure, and instead rehabilitating the injury through physical therapy.
Fantasy Spin: Regardless of what happens with the shoulder, Smith has bigger rehab fish to fry this offseason, coming off anterior cruciate ligament surgery in December. He is actually suffering from injuries in both shoulders, as well, but only the left was considered problematic enough to warrant going under the knife. It now looks like Smith may avoid a procedure on that shoulder, but he is still almost certain to find himself on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list this summer because of the knee. Though Smith has shown flashes in his first two years of being an every down NFL back, he has not truly seized the reins that the franchise was so quick to offer him. Look for the Lions to acquire a player at the position in the offseason (either through free agency or the draft) that can not only fill in early in the season as Smith heals, but also push him for the lead sled-dog position going forward. Freeney's ankle getting better
Feb 04, 12:01 PM Indianapolis Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney says his injured ankle is improving. "It's a slow progression right now, but that's where it is. Every morning I wake up, and it feels a little better," Freeney told ESPN. Freeney tore a ligament in his right ankle near the end of the AFC Championship game against the Jets on January 24.
Fantasy Spin: Freeney isn't practicing and will likely be listed as questionable or doubtful for the Super Bowl, but given the obvious magnitude of the game it would be shocking if he didn't at least try to play through the pain. View original story

Shockey practices
Feb 03, 4:01 PM New Orleans Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey, who has been hampered by knee and toe injuries, was able to practice on Wednesday in preparation for Sunday's Super Bowl against the Colts.
Fantasy Spin: Shockey has been playing through his injuries at less than 100 percent for several weeks now, and has not been effective. Expect that to continue against a Colts defense that allowed the fewest tight end receiving yards in the NFL this season. View original story

Sanchez opts for surgery
Feb 02, 5:08 PM According to the New York Daily News, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has decided to go ahead with the surgery on his left knee to strengthen a patella-stabilizing ligament. Sanchez sought second and third opinions before ultimately deciding in favor of the procedure, which should require about two months recovery-time. He is expected to be at full strength well before the start of team activities this summer.
Fantasy Spin: Sanchez has been dealing with a sore knee since dislocating a knee cap during a college practice a few years back. The procedure (scheduled to occur in the next two to three weeks) is expected to alleviate the discomfort he's felt since the initial injury, and should allow Sanchez to put the ailment behind him once and for all. Maualuga pleads guilty
Feb 02, 4:55 PM Cincinnati Bengals' linebacker Rey Maualuga pled guilty Tuesday to drunk driving charges. His seven-day jail term was suspended, but he will be on probation for the next two years, and could face a brief suspension from the league to start the 2010 season.
Fantasy Spin: Maualuga will probably miss only one or two games (if any) as a result of this transgression. The Bengals should be more concerned that perhaps his "wildman" persona on the field carries over to all facets of Maualuga's existence. Just one year into his career, the former USC product already has one "strike" against him, and further strays from legality will now incur far stiffer penalties from the league's disciplinary committee.
