Pace suspended four games
Jul 03, 10:49 AM The NFL has suspended New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace for the first four games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. In a statement released by the Jets, Pace said the suspension stemmed from his use of an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance he did not know violated the policy.
Fantasy Spin: This is enough of a blow to drop the Jets down a few pegs from their lofty perch close to the top of our team defense rankings. Obviously, you can no longer draft Pace as a starter in IDP leagues even though he was a top-30 linebacker in terms of fantasy value. View original story

Brown in great shape
Jun 30, 10:12 AM Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown is apparently in the proverbial best shape of his career. "As far as shape goes, he's outstanding right now," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano told the Miami Herald yesterday. "That sounds like a company line, but I mean it. In the weight room the guy is super right now. He weighs 230 pounds, he's running better, he is stronger, so all of those things from a progress standpoint I see as positives."
Fantasy Spin: There are some interesting factors to consider with Brown. First of all, he admitted earlier this offseason that he was never quite right last year in his first season back from ACL surgery. Secondly, Sparano usually calls players out when they are out of shape. Third, Brown is in a contract year so he has incentive to be in great shape and have a big season. He didn't deserve to get the Pro Bowl invite he got last year, but perhaps he'll make up for it this season. View original story

Lions acquire Northcutt
Jun 29, 4:57 AM Wide receiver Dennis Northcutt was traded to the Detroit Lions on Friday. In return, Jacksonville receives safety Gerald Alexander. In two years as a Jaguar, Northcutt averaged 44 catches, 573 yards, and three touchdowns. Northcutt is a slot receiver and punt returner, but returned only five punts in a reduced role last season. Alexander is entering his third NFL season at age 24. He started all 16 games as a rookie in 2007, but was as a backup in Detroit's winless season.
Fantasy Spin: Detroit gets a veteran slot receiver to complement stud Calvin Johnson, Ronald Curry, and Bryant Johnson, but Northcutt should not be counted on for regular point production. Still this receiving corps should be a little more productive than last year when Johnson was a one-man show. View original story

Lions sign Raiola to extension
Jun 26, 2:53 PM The Detroit Lions signed center Dominic Raiola to a four-year contract extension on Thursday. ESPN.com's John Clayton cites a source that says the deal is worth $20 million, including $9 million in guaranteed money.
Fantasy Spin: This is a wise move for a Lions team that needs all the stability it can get right now. This is not a great offensive line, but Raiola certainly isn't the problem. View original story

Chiefs add Brown to secondary
Jun 24, 2:06 PM The Chiefs signed former Bears safety Mike Brown to a contract on Wednesday, according to the Kansas City Star. Brown is the Bears all-time leader in defensive touchdowns with seven.
Fantasy Spin: Durability and injury issues are always the concern with Brown, who has missed 44 games over the past five seasons. If healthy, though, he should be able to push for a starting gig at safety. View original story

Jennings gets contract extension
Jun 24, 1:48 PM The Green Bay Packers have signed wide receiver Greg Jennings to a contract extension. The team announced the deal on Wednesday, though specific terms were not released. ESPN.com's John Clayton reported Tuesday that according to a source, Jennings could make $27 million in new money with the deal, but if he performs at a Pro Bowl level, his new contract could be worth as much as $30 million.
Fantasy Spin: Getting a new deal done with Jennings was high on the Packers to-do list this offseason. This does nothing to alter his fantasy value of course, but you can bet guys like Donald Driver and Anquan Boldin are paying attention to the dollar amounts. View original story

Vikings reportedly have deal with Favre
Jun 23, 9:44 PM Brett Favre has signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings and will be at the team's training camp when it opens at the end of July. That's the word from WCCO-TV's Mark Rosen, who says the Vikes have already ordered jerseys with a number 4 and Favre's name on the back. There has been no official announcement from the team nor confirmation yet from Favre's agent Bus Cook.
Fantasy Spin: This is clearly not official, but Rosen has been at WCCO in the Twin Cities for 40 years so he has some pretty darn good sources. Face it, folks, it's a done deal. We'll spell out the fantasy ramifications in detail once the contract is confirmed by both sides, but the initial fall-out may include Tarvaris Jackson looking for a job elsewhere and a slight boost to the fantasy values of all Vikings receivers. Stallworth suspended indefinitely
Jun 18, 6:06 PM NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth indefinitely without pay on Thursday. The penalty came two days after Stallworth plead guilty to DUI manslaughter and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. "There is no reasonable dispute that your continued eligibility for participation at this time would undermine the integrity of and public confidence in our league," Goodell said in part of his letter to Stallworth.
Fantasy Spin: The Browns will likely follow suit by releasing Stallworth. His NFL playing career is probably over. View original story

Curtis back to full strength
Jun 18, 9:33 AM Eagles wide receiver Kevin Curtis has completely recovered from April 15 surgery to repair his sports hernia. Curtis told abc4.com in Salt Lake City that he is 100 percent healthy right now. Curtis underwent an initial surgery to partially correct the sports hernia last August and missed the first six games of the 2008 season. However, off-season rehabilitation didn't fully heal the problem so he needed to go under the knife a second time.
Fantasy Spin: This is obviously some promising news for the Eagles offense as well as Curtis' fantasy value. He is a top-40 fantasy wideout, but beware of selecting him too high because two groin surgeries in less than a year is still a tad worrisome no matter how healthy he says he is right now before the real full-speed workouts begin. Broncos release Boss Bailey
Jun 17, 2:15 PM The Denver Broncos released linebacker Boss Bailey on Wednesday. Baily started six games for the Broncos last year before suffering a knee injury in October and undergoing microfracture surgery. His inability to play football after rehabbing his knee the past eight-plus months was the primary reason for his release.
Fantasy Spin: There is a chance that Bailey could be well enough to play by August, but no guarantee. Let this be a lesson to those of you considering drafting a player following microfracture surgery (e.g. Reggie Bush and Marques Colston). Rehabbing from the surgery is seldom without problems. Texans sign Brown to extension
Jun 17, 12:59 PM The Houston Texans signed kicker Kris Brown to a four-year extension through 2013 on Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle. The deal is worth a reported $10 million and includes $2.5 million in guaranteed money. Brown was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2009 season.
Fantasy Spin: Brown is coming off his best season and kicks for an up-and-coming offense. He's a nice kicker sleeper this year because he is being drafted as a backup, according to the latest ADP data. View original story

Jaguars cut Lemon
Jun 17, 12:48 PM The Jacksonville Jaguars released quarterback Cleo Lemon today, leaving Todd Bouman and Paul Smith as the only backups to David Garrard on the roster.
Fantasy Spin: Maybe Brian Griese should reconsider his rumored retirement plans. We're fairly sure he could stay in-state and beat out Smith and Bouman for the backup gig. Not that Lemon was a great safety net, but this just re-affirms that this offense will go south in a hurry if Garrard gets hurt. View original story

Marshall saying goodbye to Denver
Jun 17, 12:29 PM The day after reports surfaced that he had asked to be traded, Brandon Marshall is saying goodbye to Denver. On his personal blog under a post entitled "Clearing the Air," the wide receiver wrote: "To whom it may concern. Life is filled with change, and where I am in my life now change is probably best. It’s hard leaving an organization ran by one of the best owners in all of sports, and someone who’s been there for me through my ups and downs. The hardest thing was hearing Mr. B wish me luck in the future, but we both came to the conclusion that this is probably the best thing for me to grow on and off the field. I thank the Denver fans who embraced my emotion and play on the field and showing me love every time I step outside my door."
Fantasy Spin: If that's not a "so long, farewell" I don't know what is. So evidently Marshall will be the next star leaving the Broncos offense. Will he follow Jay Cutler to the Bears? The Ravens and Browns are also said to be interested. And if he goes to Cleveland, Braylon Edwards could safely be dealt by the Browns. Stay tuned because the fantasy ramifications would be plentiful. View original story

Stewart nursing sore Achilles
Jun 17, 12:22 PM Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart has been hampered by a sore left Achilles' tendon and missed all of the team's recent OTAs. The Burlington Times-News reports Stewart developed soreness in his left heel by apparently overcompensating for the toe injury he dealt with all of last year. The paper reports that he appears close to 100 percent now, however, and that he should be ready to go when the Panthers report to training camp on August 2.
Fantasy Spin: Do you get the feeling that if it's not one thing with Stewart it's another? The dude has a world of potential, but always seems to be nicked up. We'll be keeping a close eye on him when training camp opens, and so should you. View original story

Stallworth sentenced to 30 days in jail
Jun 16, 1:12 PM Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail on Tuesday after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter and reaching a financial settlement with the family of the man he killed while driving drunk on March 14. "I accept full responsibility for this horrible tragedy," Stallworth said. "I will bear this burden for the rest of my life." Stallworth will also serve two years of house arrest and was given eight years probation; he must also undergo drug and alcohol testing, will have a lifetime driver's license suspension and must perform 1,000 hours of community service.
The NFL is now expected to review the matter for possible disciplinary action.
Fantasy Spin: You can bet that commissioner Roger Goodell will suspend Stallworth. How long is the only real question. Even though he is going to try to attempt to resume his football career, fantasy owners can write him off for this season. View original story
